Christmas Joys

Christmas lights, sweets, greenery, singing,
candles, cookies, ornaments, bells ringing.
Gifts that are given and received too,
some re-gifting or buying them new.
Wrapping paper spread over the floor,
bows, ribbons, tape, name tags galore.
Being with friends and family each year,
sharing with one another Christmas cheer.
Remember the center of our celebration--
Christ Jesus coming for our salvation.

Merry Christmas!

Poison in Your Mouth - Part 2

Are you a roaring forest fire?! Like the forest fire being started by just a spark, a word spoken can have that same domino effect. One person speaks a harsh word to someone and then that person, in turn, speaks sinfully to someone else and it can continue throughout families, churches, or communities. On the other hand, think of the power there is in a kind word, focusing on what is encouraging to another person. That person will hopefully be influenced to speak a kind word to someone else, and so on. I think we would all choose the latter words if we could. Does this mean that we never tell someone of their sin? No, it is often necessary to speak the truth in love. It takes great wisdom from the Lord to choose appropriate words that will bring godly correction.

The gospel is at the center of the book of James. He says (James 3:2) that one who can control their words is a perfect person. Here is that same word from James 1:4, meaning “complete” and “mature.” As Christians, our goal is to be mature in Christ, and by trusting in the Lord, He is bringing that growth to our lives. It might not be, in our estimation fast enough, but God is faithful and is continually at work. We will not be sinless in this life, but it points us to the One, Jesus Christ, who didn’t sin with His tongue. He always said what was necessary for the right moment. We need our Savior’s help continually. He has given us the Holy Spirit as our teacher and guide. That’s great news!

The words from James 1:19, “So then my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath,” is essential for guarding our tongues. I know times when I haven’t slowed down to think before blurting out something, and I’ve been sorry afterwards. Remember Proverbs 15:1 says, “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” When emotions are high it is an opportune time to slow down, listen and think of soft answers. This can’t be done in our own strength, so James 1:5-6 is important; the Lord promises to give us wisdom if we ask in faith. It might come in the short version of -- “Lord, HELP!” May we bring refreshing springs to a heated discussion instead of more fire.

Is Poison in Your Mouth?

James 3: 1-12 comes right after speaking about genuine faith- “faith without works is dead." The use of our tongue is another evidence of whether we have that genuine faith or not. James doesn’t mince words, especially when writing about the tongue. He says, “The tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.” He also says, “it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” This gets our attention!

Speaking ungodly comes out of what’s inside us-"...each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires...when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin..." (James 1:14-15) James gives us a picture of a ship being controlled by its rudder or a horse being led by the bit. The tongue, in the same way, will move the rest of a person. Our words effect our emotions, thoughts, and actions. You’ve probably seen the person who, after speaking harshly, has that hardened look on his face. It can’t be avoided.

Hypocritical words or tone of voice also come from our lips; such as-- one minute we can be yelling at the kids, and the next we can answer the phone so sweetly. Or we go to worship on Sundays, and the next day belittle others. James says a spring cannot produce bitter and fresh water. In the same way, the mature Christian cannot have both cursing and blessing come out of his mouth. "...no man can tame the tongue."

To be continued...

Bible Bee

How much Scripture do you know by heart? 2 verses? 20 verses? I can definitely now say that I don't have very much scripture memorized. Last Friday Mom turned on the first national Bible Bee (we listened online at their website). It was amazing to just sit and listen to all of these kids rattle off 20 verse passages.

It most certainly was an encouragement and fun to hear how much kids are capable of memorizing. I say kids, but the oldest were around my age or a year younger. Praise God for youth who are now encouraged to memorize scripture and keep it hidden in their heart!

Happy Reformation!

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
our helper He amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
his craft and pow'r are great; and armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
were not the right man on our side, the man of God's own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he,
Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same,
and he must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
we will not fear for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us.
The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
his rage we can endure, for low his doom is sure;
one little word shall fell him.

That Word above all earthly pow'rs, no thanks to them, abideth;
the Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
the body they may kill: God's truth abideth still;
his kingdom is forever.

Blessings

I was thinking the other day about blessings and how it is so easy to take them for granted. I automatically assume that I will go to work today. I presume to know that tomorrow will hold what I've planned. Too often I don't give credit to our awesome God for these special every day blessings that He showers down on us. The only reason I am able to go to the store like I planned is because God has blessed me in that area. This applies to other areas as well. We can take our family for granted as well. It can be pretty easy to just go everyday without thanking God for the family He put us in.

Those are just some simple everyday examples of blessings. Often those are hard. The big long term blessings are a little easier to spot. Blessings such as being able to go on a missionary trip, being blessing with children, or completing a college degree are easier to see. This doesn't mean we can overlook them though. We are a month and a half away from Thanksgiving. Do you stop and count your blessings more than just on that holiday? Do you ever think about how much God has blessed you with? I know I don't always. Lets remember to stop in the midst of all our business and thank God for all that He has given to us as His children.

James

"My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;"

I just finished reading through James and providentially my Mother is beginning to study this book in her women's Bible study. So, I think it would be good to put a few thoughts down about this book.

One thing that struck me when reading the passage above is how often I don't ask and when I do it's not in faith but with the thought that "this way I will get what I want" and that is not the correct attitude to have! We should be prayerfully crying out to God in faith knowing that He knows all our needs and will provide for us. He will also tell us no when we don't need what we are asking for. That is what I have struggles with before. I ask because of course this is something that I need! Well, we need to remember that God knows best and He will be the judge of what I need.

James is a wonderful book and can be a great help to us all!

Brush Up On Your English Grammar!

Since it's that time of the year when schools are starting up again, I thought I'd mention a helpful book. It will take you back to the basics of identifying the parts of speech, sentence structure, and diagramming sentences. Now if you made a face after reading that dreaded word "diagramming" then this book is for you. Mrs. Wilson shows how easy it is to diagram, as each new part of speech is taught. She says, "Diagramming sentences is a good exercise because it forces the student to analyze every word in the sentence by examining the function of each word." I think of diagramming sentences like taking a puzzle apart and grouping the pieces, by color or shape, so you can see where the pieces go and how they fit together. Our Mother Tongue will certainly give you the tools to know our unique language better and use it correctly.

Happy Birthday again!

This time to my wonderful Mom! Yesterday was her birthday and she was actually busy most of the day so we didn't do too much of a party. You are a great blessing to all of us kids Mom. We love you!

Who Likes a Mystery?!!

If you've read the Mandy books and liked them you'll think this is a pretty cool story. For those of you who don't know about the Mandy books, I'll just say that Mandy loves to solve mysteries. Surprisingly, our mystery actually didn't take too long to solve, but it's a good one!

This past Tuesday my husband noticed there was a dent in the side of our Cadillac and he wondered what had happened. On Wednesday morning he mentioned it to me and we went outside to take a look at this unexplained oddity. Upon careful observation my husband said, "Notice this on top of the hood. It looks like blood." We both looked at it and confirmed it did indeed look like blood. That definitely sparked our curiosity. We started trying to figure out what could have hit the side of our car and splatter blood like that. "Was it a biker or a skater who slammed into the car as it was parked on the road on Monday night? Wow! They must have hit pretty hard to bleed like that!" It didn't really make sense, so I think we both went into the house thinking that we probably would never know the mystery of the dent.

That night I began to read our local newspaper. On the front page an article intrigued me. It was entitled "Dog attacks doe near downtown Grants Pass" I began to read that a "100 pound Pit Bull chased and caught a panicked doe near downtown." I kept reading, "The attacking dog ran through traffic in pursuit of its prey. The doe in its panic hit and damaged a parked car before bounding into the rack of a passing pickup truck." All of a sudden the words parked car stared back at me and a question mark lit up over my head! I then looked at the day it happened which was Monday afternoon. As my husband sat on the couch nearby I explained the story to him and asked, "Could this be the answer to our mystery?" Next, I yelled to the other room, "Hey Molly! Did you drive the Cadillac on Monday to work?!" She confirmed that she had driven to work, which is downtown and had parked on 4th & J. As my husband and I talked it all seemed to make sense that the deer might have been the culprit who made the dent in our Cadillac.

Well, to be quite sure, we decided to call the newspaper to help clarify the details. Sparked into activity by this question, my husband, detective extraordinaire, talked with newspaper reporter Shaun and first asked exactly where in Grants Pass was the car. After explaining it was in the vicinity of 4th & J St, Shaun seemed curious as to why my husband was calling. My husband then explained that he thought the car, hit by the deer, was our Cadillac, which was parked near our daughter' work. One of the first things the reporter asked was, "So did your daughter come home and say, 'a deer hit our car in downtown Grants Pass!' And you thought, 'Right, that's a good story!'" Ha! Ha! Actually Molly hadn't even noticed the dent! :) So, to end this mystery, the police report did say that the parked car was a Cadillac. Amazing! Who would have thought?!

I guess you might be wondering why we didn't first wonder how much it would be to fix the damage. Well, the car is on its way out to the car graveyard so that is why it didn't come into our minds. You might also be wondering what happened to the poor scared doe. The story went on to say that the dog got a hold of it, but passers-by scared off the dog and the doe ran off with its two fawns following it. I assume the deer probably went off to die. A sad ending for that side of the story, but a mystery satisfactorily ended for the Sumpters.

This is our "Gray Ghost" as my in-laws call it. You can see the mysterious dent! The blood has already been washed off.

Another Idaho Trip!

I had another opportunity to spend a few days with the grandchildren. Sadly, Molly couldn't go because she had to work. Here are a couple of videos: the first is River enjoying his bubble machine, with Felicity & Dad helping; the second is Tovia walking full steam ahead. She's inside their new house- you can see her walk out of the beautiful blue kitchen and continue into the dining room/living room with the newly finished wood floors.

Homeschool Opportunities in Grants Pass

There are several exciting opportunities happening around Grants Pass in the way of Homeschool support. One, Covered Bridge Academy, a local Christian Homeschool Cooperative, which was launched last fall, is offering four more classes this fall. Their goals are to Develop Christian Character, Pursue Academic Excellence and Enjoy Delightful Collaboration. Classes are being offered once a week by homeschool parents, primarily Dads, to augment subjects being taught at home.

Another opportunity is Classical Conversations, which is a national Christian organization that equips parents and students with the classical tools of learning needed to discover the order and beauty of God's creation. This fall will be the beginning of a Grants Pass CC Community. They also will meet once a week where parents, with their children, will be mentored by a trained tutor.

Both of these groups see the parents as the central teachers of their children, and often parents need assistance in this awesome responsibility. That's why these two groups are being promoted to the Grants Pass Homeschool Community. As a Christian community we have opportunities to show the love of Christ to one another and learn about God's world together. In the process may we be a witness to our City for our Lord Jesus Christ.

A story

When was the last time you read the Bible as a story? I don't know about you but when I read the Bible I think of theology and how much knowledge I can gain from it. It's not very often that I think of it as a story. There is a big difference and it should grab our attention. A lot of Christians like sitting down with a theology book and learning new things and becoming familiar with new Ideas (and those are very good things!) but I believe there is a danger of reading too much theology and not enough story. When was the last time you sat down with a good fiction book? A fiction book that was filled with enjoyable, good, and wholesome story in it? Those fiction books are like small mirrors or copycats of the stories of the Bible.

The Bible is not primarily a theology book that we simply go to to learn something new. That is only part of it. The Bible is a huge book of stories. Take the first story. There was nothing but God. Now God is creating! Now there is a world! It just keeps building and building and it keeps your attention as a wonderful story. A lot of the time the theology is easy to see and get, but it is the story that we miss or don't understand. I believe we can become better equipped to read the Bible when we read good fiction. Not only does it train us to read the Bible better but this also helps us learn about our own world and our own life. Something might happen to you during the day such a seeing a friend. Later, you could read that same event in the book that you are reading. Good stories are the ones that truly and accurately reflect life.

Reading the Bible as a story is important. This is an area I need to work on. What about you? Do you like fiction books? Maybe you aught to go read one right now. It will definitely help you read the Bible better.

Me, Homeschool My Children?!

Thirty years ago, if someone would have said that in the future I would homeschool my children, I would have looked at them like they were crazy. At that time my husband and I were thoroughly steeped in the mindset of the public school system, which we attended into our college years. But the Lord, who is always at work, changed our thinking. He reminded us, as young parents, of the awesome responsibility we had to raise our children for Him, which meant taking every opportunity to show our children how to fear the Lord and obey His commands. We realized that if we sent our children off to school then many occasions would be missed to do just that. Homeschooling our children was the answer. What I didn't realize was how much God would teach me.

There have been times when I have wondered if I was doing enough for my children, especially when I look at the curriculum catalogs and all those wonderful books cry out saying, "your children need these, buy me!" I think about the times I don't have a clue what I am doing- the failed Science experiments- "Mom, what's it supposed to do?"... or having to look up the answers in the book again-"I should know that answer!"... also sitting on the nice comfy couch after lunch and falling asleep while reading books for wide-awake eyes- "Mom, wake up!" How humbling! Why in the world would I homeschool?! I am not trained to do this! Yes, you are! If you are a child of the King He is in the process of teaching you and He can use you to teach your children! Oh, that's right! I'm thankful for the people God has brought into my life to model for me or recommend good books. Also they have been models of Christ's love to my children. That's the beauty of the Church! Have I done enough in teaching my children? Most assuredly not, but God has promised to be a God to my husband and me and also to our children. Graciously, He takes our imperfect attempts at teaching and makes them better, of which I am very thankful!

The Lord is my patient, merciful heavenly Father teaching me and molding me. He uses my children to do His work. As much as I like to say that I teach my children, the reverse is certain—they definitely teach me. Notably, the Scriptures say that I must become like a child to enter the kingdom of heaven. What better way to learn this fundamental truth than by spending time with the children God has given me? It has been a joy to learn, or relearn, many truths about God’s world with my children and I know there is even more learning ahead of me. I am thankful for the Lord’s leading us and His sanctifying work along the way. Although home schooling might not be suitable for every family, I can say, after 23 years, it has been a tremendous blessing for me.

Has it really been that long?!

22 years ago today Andy was born! The day he decided to make his appearance was very much appreciated, since he was 10 days late! He didn't quite make it to Aunt Molly's birthday, but that was ok with me. At 9 pounds 5 ounces, I was ready to have him out! Having 3 older brothers to play war and other games, he's always loved some challenging competition and he's always been good at everything. I remember a time when Andy was about 3 or 4 yrs old and he would honestly whip me good in the game of Concentration- where the cards are face down and you turn over 2 at a time and try to get a pair. He could remember where all the cards were and I had to guess! So to this day if I beat Andy in a game I am so thrilled because he doesn't give up easy. I know that this kind of determination in competition is carried over in other areas of his life, to his advantage, and may he never forget that his family is cheering him all the way.
"How about a game of cards?!!"

The blessing of brothers

A question I often get asked is "How can you live with all those brothers of yours?" I've learned to just smile and expect this question after I first let people know that I am the only girl of the family. What is interesting is that this comes from women and girls and not guys. I will meet guys who have grown up with only sisters and no brothers, but I rarely meet girls who have grown up with only boys in their life. I want to say that girls who have no brothers are missing a very fun and amazing experience. However, if God has put you in a family with no brothers, then that is the family that is best for you. I have come to see that my family is the best one for me, but of course not for everyone else. That being said, brothers are a great blessing to us girls in many ways.

First off laughter abounds. I have learned to laugh at myself through my brothers. Boys have no trouble in pointing out your faults and showing how silly you are. It's amazing how ignorant you can be of how many foolish things you do that you don't even realize. Well, with brothers around they make sure that you remember the silly things that you have done. In addition to laughing at myself, I can laugh with my brothers because they are just so much fun! "A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones" (Proverbs 17:22). So yes, brothers are fun to laugh with.

Second we girls get to practice on our brothers. I've gotten a lot of practice mothering my brothers (poor guys :D). Another thing that will come with practice is just getting to know how guys think and act. Through my brothers I have learned a lot about boys in general. A last practical thing that I have gotten to practice on my brothers is my cooking. Boys like to eat and they also have no trouble giving you advice on how you can make your cooking better so that it will taste good! So, practicing on your brothers can be fun and helpful to all involved.

Last we have things in common. So to you girls who have brothers that have been reading this, get rid of the idea that your brothers are a burden and annoying because they are different! I have gotten frustrated with my brothers because we are different, but that is normal. You should not focus on your differences, but rather turn those differences into learning about each other. Even if it doesn't seem like you have anything in common with your brothers, you probably do. In our family, a lot of us love to read! That is something that we all enjoy and we are able to talk about or read different books aloud with one another.

In conclusion I want to encourage those girls with brothers to look at the blessings of having brothers and not focus on the fundamental differences between girls and boys. Use the time you have your brothers in the same home for fun and learning and not for frustration and annoyance. God has placed you in your family because it is the one that is best for you and no one else. Learn to see it for the blessing that it is and you will enjoy every minute of your time with your family.

BLESSED MOTHERHOOD

We women are blessed with the privilege of being mothers for the glory of God. It is accomplished through the God-given sphere of the marriage of one man to one woman. Our mission is to give ourselves away for our family, so that they are able to worship the heavenly Father. When the mundane duties of doing the dishes, keeping the laundry going, picking up toys one more time, or perhaps the filthy challenges of changing another dirty diaper and cleaning up vomit in the middle of the night cloud our minds, we must remember what great influence we have over this generation and for many generations to come. Keeping this eternal, futuristic perspective in mind, makes those ill-favored duties of the home fade away. Through the Lord's intervention, we have the high calling of giving our children the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control and, as James says below, making them "ornaments" in society. Since the Lord of all the universe has made us women and has given us this awesome task, we can't help but give thanks and worship Him!

"The Bible gives [woman] her place of majesty and dignity in the domestic circle- the heart of her husband and the heart of her family. It is the female supremacy of that domain where love, tenderness, refinement, thought, and feeling preside. It is the privilege of making her husband happy and honored, and her sons and daughters the ornaments of human society. it is the sphere of piety, prudence, diligence in the domestic station, and a holy and devout life. It is the sphere that was occupied by Hannah, the mother of Samuel; by Elizabeth, the mother of John; by Eunice, the mother of Timothy; and by Mary, the mother of Jesus; It is the respect and esteem of mankind. It is the silent, unobserved, unobtrusive influence by which she accomplishes more for her race than many whose names occupy a broad space on the page of history." A Woman's Mission by John Angell James

Respect for rulers

I've been reading about this subject in By this Standard by Greg Bahnsen. He has a lot of great words to say. To summarize, Rulers are to be respected because they were given their authority by God Himself. Yet our rulers are under obligation to keep the law of God as well, for they are our example. We are also obligated to not stand for injustice when clearly a ruler is not following the law of God. All of these points are prevalent to us today. Another important thing to remember is prayer. Our rulers and those in authority need our prayer, for they have been given a great privilege and awesome responsibility by our great God. We must remember to give them the respect they rightly deserve which includes pointing out the errors they make when they make wrong decisions which are contrary to the law of God. I pray that this will be more practiced and we will be better equipped to follow the law of our God in this aspect in these days.

The Persecuted Church

I have been reading the book Tortured For Christ, by Pastor Richard Wurmbrand, and have been made more aware of those suffering for the sake of following Christ. We may not be persecuted openly here in America, but we can certainly be in prayer for those who are. Here are two women who need our prayers (as of April 3, 2009).

Iran- Two Iranian Women Arrested and Held in "Notorious" Prison

On March 5, Marzieh Amirizadeh Esmaeilabad and Maryam Rustampoor were arrested by Iranian security forces and labeled "anti-government activists," according to Farsi Christian News Network (FCNN). Thirty year-old Marzieh and 27-year-old Maryam are being held at Evin Prison, which is notorious for treating women badly. "Both women are allowed just a one minute telephone call everyday to their immediate families. Both are unwell and in need of urgent medical attention," FCNN reported.

During their last call on March 28, Mazieh said that she was suffering from an infection and high fever. She said, "I am dying." Marzieh and Maryam's apartment was searched and their belongings were confiscated. "Their only crime is that they are committed Christians who follow the teachings of Jesus," FCNN added. " They are being unfairly labeled as 'anti government activists' because of the hostility of the government towards practicing Christians." The women have reportedly been interrogated numerous times and were held in three different police detention centers before being sent to Evin Prison. FCNN reported an exorbitant bail amount of US$ 400,000 has been set even though Marzieh and Maryam's families have been told on numerous occasions that a judge is not available to discuss the case.

Marzieh and Maryam's arrest is the latest incident highlighting increased government intimidation of Christians in Iran. Believers are subjected to surveillance, arrests, imprisonment, and sometimes torture. The Voice of the Martyrs encourages you to pray for the immediate release of Marzieh and Maryam. Ask God to heal, encourage and protect them. Pray they will continue to stand for Christ during this difficult time.

Kids' Carnival Report

Saturday went well! There was a good crowd of children and helpers. It looked like everyone was having fun. The puppeteers did two performances; the first one was well attended since the kids were waiting to eat their lunch after the puppets. It was a beautiful day so many activities were outside as well. What a blessing for all!

This Saturday Joni & Friends of Southern Oregon is hosting the annual luncheon for mothers of children with special needs. Mothers will be treated to an elegantly served lunch, an inspirational program, and a gift basket overflowing with goodies and gifts, while the children will be treated to a fun carnival packed full of games, activities, food, and puppets. The Living Faith Puppeteers, of Faith Presbyterian Church, will be ministering the gospel to the children through their puppets. Please pray for a good day for all, and that many would look to the the Lord who sees and knows the challenges that we all face. He is the One who gives lasting hope!

Happy Easter!

Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earth quake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men. But the angel answered and said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you." So they went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word. Matthew 28:1-8
Do you ever wonder why God chose women to find out first about the resurrection? We might be tempted to believe that it's because women are superior to men, or women somehow have special privileges with God. But with other scriptures in view, this cannot be the reason.

This is what John Calvin says in his commentary on Matthew:
"He began with the women, and not only presented himself to be seen by them, but even gave them a commission to announce the gospel to the apostles, so as to become their instructors. This was intended, first, to chastise the indifference of the apostles, who were like persons half-dead with fear, while the women ran with alacrity to the sepulcher, and likewise obtained no ordinary reward. For though their design to anoint Christ, as if Ire were still dead, was not free from blame, still he forgave their weakness, and bestowed on them distinguished honor, by taking away from men the apostolic office, and committing it to them for a short time. In this manner also he exhibited an instance of what Paul tells us, that he chooses those things which are foolish and weak in the world to abase the loftiness of the flesh. And never shall we be duly prepared to learn this article of our faith in any other manner than by laying aside all pride, and submitting to receive the testimony of the women. Not that our faith ought to be confined within such narrow limits, but because the Lord, in order to make trial of our faith, determines that we shall become fools, before he admits us to a more ample knowledge of his mysteries."

Pride and Prejudice

The way I got hooked on Austen was through Pride and Prejudice. My sister-in-law had been telling us all about it and encouraging me to read it until I finally decided to try it and see what all the fuss was about. :) Needless to say I got hooked!

Pride and Prejudice is the story of the Bennet sisters. The story opens on the exciting news that a new bachelor is in town and Mrs. Bennet is "thinking of his marrying one of them [the sisters]." Unfortunately things do not go quite according to Mrs. Bennet's plan, at first.

The said bachelor is a Mr. Bingley who brings with him his two sisters, brother-in-law, and a friend named Mr. Darcy. My first thought of Darcy was that he was a creep and a villain, but soon my opinion was changed. I won't say how, you'll have to read this story for yourself! We are at first only interested in Jane Bennet (the oldest sister) and her prospects for a husband but gradually the story shifts to Elizabeth Bennet and her prospects.

The main character is Elizabeth Bennet and we see the actions of others through her eyes, and only perceive what is happening by what Elizabeth knows. She believes herself capable of understanding and interpreting people and events and if she doesn't, then she just attempts to laugh off her mistakes for "Follies and nonsense , whims and inconsistencies , do divert me, I own, and I laugh at them whenever I can."

Another character I have to mention is Mr. Collins. He is the prime example in this book of Austen's witty style. Collins is a clergymen and the Bennet girls' cousin, and as such "I feel it my duty to promote and establish the blessing of peace in all families within the reach of my influence; and on these grounds I flatter myself that my present overtures of good will are highly commendable, and that the circumstance of my being in the entail of Longbourn estate will be kindly overlooked on your side, and not lead you to reject the offered olive branch." As it can be seen, Collins is full of himself which makes it all the more entertaining when he receives the talking to that he deserves.

The fun comes in conversation between characters. It shows how wrong some people can be when they are holding onto their pride, or are prejudiced. In the end we get to laugh right along with Elizabeth and not only at others, but at herself as well.

Today is a Day of Celebration

Our granddaughter/niece, Tovia Ann, is one years old today! We are in awe as we think back to a year ago when she was born premature and was in the NICU for 2 months. We thank the Lord for His care and her growth over this last year. She is a walking (crawling) miracle! Her life will always declare that our God is good and gracious! We also remember her sister, Anastacia Ruth, who died, quite probably, so that Tovia could live. She is a picture of true frienship and love. It will be a joyous reunion when we join her in our heavenly home! We have a great God who hears our cries for help and He comes to the rescue!

"Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! Serve the Lord with gladness; come before His presence with singing. Know that the Lord, He is God; it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations." Psam 100

Get Hooked on Austen: Emma

As the story opens in the Woodhouse parlor, we read of sorrow mixed with joy as Emma, a young lady almost 21 yrs old, tries to console her father. Miss Taylor, Emma’s governess, has recently married and Mr. Woodhouse laments that it is a dreadful event. Emma, though she will miss her governess and best friend, comforts her father with the thought that they will still see her quite often. Her father, not liking change, cannot be consoled because “Miss Taylor” is now “Mrs. Weston.” Skillfully interweaving many characters into her novels, Jane Austen keeps the reader engaged. Emma is no exception.

Copious characters, in Emma, are promptly placed so the reader must be keenly aware to keep them all straight. I have to admit that I needed a “cheat sheet” to help me when I first read Emma. I was at first confused because “Emma” was sometimes called by her first name, and at other times by her last name, “Miss Woodhouse.” This was done with some of the other people too. It helped me to write down characters as they were added and I kept the list in the book so I could refer to it. Consequently, toward the middle of the narrative I no longer needed my cheat sheet. So keep that in mind, if you are easily confused like me.

At the beginning of the story, the “handsome” Emma is self assured, claiming that she is the one who is responsible for Miss Taylor and Mr. Weston meeting and encouraging the commitment. Having this accomplishment in mind, she states that other couples might need her help in matchmaking also. Fervently, Mr. Knightley, a close family friend, warns her against interfering and her father adamantly counsels her that matches “are silly things, and break up one’s family circle grievously.” With Austen’s wit and sometimes humor, the reader is drawn into the various struggles in which Emma finds herself. At the novel’s conclusion, she has flourished into a wiser more mature woman.

One of my favorite characters is Emma’s father. Although he is a friendly, hospitable man, he has a propensity of fretting about a variety of things such as: drafts in the house, the food people eat, or the weather. Emma, having a bright, happy personality, adores her dear papa and respectfully tries to cheer him when he starts to worry. I can picture Mr. Woodhouse sitting in an overstuffed chair with a blanket over his spindly legs exclaiming, “…But surely, Mr. Churchill, nobody would think of opening the windows at Randalls. Nobody could be so imprudent! I never heard of such a thing. Dancing with open windows! I am sure neither your father nor Mrs. Weston would suffer it.” I couldn’t help but smile as I read Mr. Woodhouse’s concerns.

The reader will certainly learn some valuable lessons from Emma. In Peter Leithart’s book, Miniatures & Morals he states, “Perhaps the most Christian novel Austen wrote, Emma is concerned with the relation of charity and truth; it is about ‘speaking the truth in love,’ or more precisely, about truth-speaking as the path to love.” Remarkably, one noble character, no matter how difficult, does speak the truth in love; while in contrast, the society all around is habitually trying to play its part, which is often a lie. I highly recommend Emma. There is so much to take in and enjoy. Read it and get hooked on Austen!

Jane Austen: Basics

We have not been doing much Jane Austen blogging, so I am going to try to do some more of that. I found out this past summer that some members of my extended family may not know who Jane Austen is and probably have not read any of her books (shocking! :) So, this post is for anyone who wants to learn more about Jane Austen and her books.

Who was Jane Austen? Jane Austen was a novelist who lived from 1775-1817. She wrote 6 major novels which were published, and three unfinished novels, along with several other works. Jane grew up in a large family of 6 brothers and 1 sister. She never married and died at the age of 41.

What about the novels? The novels of Jane Austen include: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbey, Emma, Persuasion, and Mansfield Park. The most popular is probably Pride and Prejudice, which has been made into several film adaptations.

Are there books on the novels or life of Jane Austen? Yes! The one that I have read and recommend is: Miniatures and Morals by Peter Leithart. His new book will be coming out this month called Writer of Fancy: The Playful Piety of Jane Austen.

So those are some basics on Jane Austen. I think we will give you a synopsis of each of the novels in the days ahead. Hope you enjoyed reading these facts!

Another Movie

Some good friends of ours were able to be a part of a movie last summer (and one of them was the lead actress!). It's called COME WHAT MAY, made mostly by students from a new Christian film company, Advent Film Group. The movie is about purity, the sanctity of life, and the importance of doing what's right...come what may.

This movie is being released to DVD nationwide on March 17th by Provident Films, the same company that distributed
FACING THE GIANTS and FIREPROOF.

You can watch the trailer here and see a review of the movie here.

I would encourage all of you to buy a copy of this movie when it is released on March 17th. It has a great message!

God's Law is relevant

"Over against the autonomous ethical philosophies of men, where good and evil are defined by sinful speculation, the Christian ethic gains its character and direction from the revealed word of God, a revelation which harmonizes with the general revelation made of God's standards through the created order and man's conscience."

The Next Generation

Why would we want to remember our history? Especially if holds bad or painful memories? That is a huge question but shouldn't be taken lightly. We have a responsibility to learn about our history so that we will learn from it. Last night our small group watched a movie called The league of grateful Sons put out by vision forum. It was a very educational film and its main message was that we should be learning about our history, so that we will not be doomed to repeat it.

This is so true. My generation needs to be willing to be taught by our parents and grandparents so that we will be able to make wiser decisions. Think about what a difference it would make if we would start to listen to our parents and ask them for counsel. Too often I think we are tempted to just assume we know enough to make our own choices. We should never jerk away from counsel and it is time for this next generation to rise up and learn from their parents and grandparents so that we will be better prepared to face the future.

Our History

Yesterday passed so fast and that can happen a lot, but do you know what the significance of yesterday was? Yesterday marked something that happened in our history. To learn more go here. I hope that we will remember our history and learn from it for our future.

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths."

Must See Movie

My daughter and sons saw this movie when it came out in the theaters and they came home saying it was good. I just saw it a few weeks ago after Molly bought the DVD, and I agree that it is good. In fact I recommend that everyone should see it. Kirk Cameron does a great job as the husband, as well as the other actresses and actors. It has a good story line and gives hope for broken marriages or gives suggestions for keeping healthy marriages strong. Go rent it or borrow it from a friend; it is worth it! Check out the trailer:

Why Worry?!

The God of the Bible is not weak; He is strong. He is all-mighty. Nothing happens without His permission or apart from His purposes- even evil. Nothing distrubs or puzzles Him. His purposes are always accomplished. Therefore those who know Him rightly act with boldness, assured that God is with them to accomplish His own desirable purposes in their lives. James Boice

The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He has chosen as His own inheritance. Psalm 33:11-12

God reigns over the nations; God sits on His holy throne. The princes of the people have gathered together, the people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong to God; He is greatly exalted. Psalm 47:8-9

The Present

How many hours do you spend thinking of the future? Last night I was reading The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis and it brought up an interesting point about our thoughts of the future.

"He (God) therefore, I believe, wants them to attend chiefly to two things, to eternity itself, and to that point of time which they call the present. For the present is the point at which time touches eternity. Of the present moment, and of it only, humans have an experience analogous to the experience which... in it alone freedom and actuality are offered them. He would therefore have them continually concerned either with eternity (which means being concerned with Him) or with the Present-either meditating on their eternal union with, or separation from, Him, or else obey the present voice of conscience, bearing the present cross, receiving the present grace, giving thanks for the present pleasure."

Lewis goes on to qualify that we should be concerned with the future, in as much as planning for the next day or next week goes, but our focus, our aim is in the present. I had never thought of it that way before and it hit home. Too often I worry about the future, and do not concern myself or worry about what I am doing right now! I think we need to adjust our thinking to bring ourselves to proper perspective. Right now, I am to be doing the work that God has given me. Right now, I am to be acting on His Word. Steven Curtis Chapman expresses these thoughts very well in his song Miracle of the Moment: (go here if you would like to listen to it).

It's time for letting go
All of our "if onlies"
Cause we don't have a time machine
And even if we did
Would we really want to use it
Would we really want to go change everything

Cause we are who and where and what we are for now
And this is the only moment we can do anything about

So breathe it in and breathe it out
And listen to your heartbeat
There's a wonder in the here and now
It's right there in front of you
And I don't want you to miss the miracle of the moment

There's only One who knows
What's really out there waiting
And all the moments yet to be
And all we need to know
Is He's out there waiting
To Him the future's history

And He has given us a treasure called right now
And this is the only moment we can do anything about

So breathe it in and breathe it out
And listen to your heartbeat
There's a wonder in the here and now
It's right there in front of you
And I don't want you to miss the miracle of the moment

And if it brings you tears
Then taste them as they fall
Let them soften your heart

And if it brings you laughter
Then throw your head back
And let it go
Let it go, yeah
You gotta let it go

And listen to your heartbeat

And breathe it in and breathe it out
And listen to your heartbeat
There's a wonder in the here and now
It's right there in front of you
And I don't want you to miss the miracle of the moment

And breathe it in and breathe it out
And listen to your heartbeat
There's a wonder in the here and now (here and now)
It's right there in front of you
And I don't want you to miss the miracle
Of the moment

No, we cannot control the future, but God does. We don't need to worry about the future because we can trust that God is in control of it all. So, plan and prepare for the future, but don't live in it because God has called you to live in the present and be acting in the present.

God is Faithful

Today I have been looking at pictures from the last year of Church events, our family, and just any pictures we have from this last year. I am again going to attempt to make a slideshow of pictures of all of our church's events from this past year. It has been fun to look over some of these shots and see all the great things that God has done in this past year.

For example, we had a mystery dinner for all of the younger couples in our church this past November. It has been fun to go through those photos and remember how enjoyable the evening was.

We also have some pictures from a couple of our fellowship meals from the past year. We have one every month, so they all blend together, but the thing that stuck out here was how much our church just likes to spend time together. That is why we have this time of eating (some great food!) and talking, because we want to keep our relationships strong.

All of this has reminded me how much our church has grown this past year. This may not be in terms of numbers of people, but in terms of spiritual growth. We have learned much, and continue to learn, together.

"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" -Psalm 133:1

The Glory of God

"Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth! Tell me, if you have understanding, or who stretched the line on it? On what were it's bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?" -Job 38:4-7

In the verse above, God is talking. This verse encompasses something that I was reminded of this week. I watched a video with some friends and it started out talking about our galaxy and the wonders that surround our planet. When you look at the stars, do you see the handiwork of God, or just some small points in the night sky? I often think of the stars as so small compared to our big planet. How wrong I have been. There are many stars that are much bigger than earth. The largest star that we have discovered is called Canis Majoris and it is huge! Compared to that star, we are tiny. Can you believe that God would stoop to live among us? This is just a tip of the iceberg though, because God is intimately involved with each one of us.

We may know all of this, but do we understand what this means? It means that we are but a vapor, yet God loves us; our planet is a spec in the universe, but God knows me. How do I know all of this? My answer is Romans 8:38-39:

"For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

So, how can we apply this to our trials and hardships? Because we can see with our own eyes how great our God is, we can have confidence that God will care for us; and because God created all with just a breath, we can know that He is able and will take care of us because He takes such an interest in us and loved us so much that He sent His only son to die for us. Those who don't believe this will find no comfort and those who refuse this will not have true peace.

Give praise to God for He is great!

Psalm of the day

Psalm 47
O clap your hands, all peoples;
Shout to God with the voice of joy.
For the LORD Most High is to be feared,
A great King over all the earth.
He subdues peoples under us
And nations under our feet.
He chooses our inheritance for us,
The glory of Jacob whom He loves. Selah.
God has ascended with a shout,
The LORD, with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises;
Sing praises to our King, sing praises.
For God is the King of all the earth;
Sing praises with a skillful psalm.
God reigns over the nations,
God sits on His holy throne.
The princes of the people have assembled themselves as the people of the God of Abraham,
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
He is highly exalted.

A New Week

It is sometimes difficult to start a new week. Thoughts of the last week still linger and this can be especially true during the hard weeks. This last week we put our dog down. As hard of a decision as it was, it was the right one and God gave us wisdom to know when the right time would be. It's been a few days, so things are getting better, but there will still be hard times.

But all of that was last week! Yesterday morning I heard a sermon on not being childish but childlike. I think it is very childish to keep looking back at the week before. Yes, when the hard weeks come you should mourn, weep when it's time, and cry when there is sorrow, but don't dwell there. Our Savior was crucified on a dark, black Friday; but on the first day of a new week, He rose! Hallelujah! That is our hope. That is what we should emulate. Be sorrowful, but don't let it last. It can't and mustn't last.

Let your laughter soar! Shout out your joy!
So, how will you begin your week? Will you begin it with backward-looking and tears, or will you let your tears be dried and give yourself over to the joy and hope that we have been freely given?

Rejoice, because a new week is here!

SAVE BABIES! STOP ABORTION!

This was our local Walk for Life.

For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, (O Lord) for I am fearfully and wonderfully made, marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them. Psalm 139:13-16

For the Unborn

This coming Sunday we are attending our annual "March for Life". I want to encourage each and every one of you to find out if there is one in your area. If there is, then you should definitely go! This is a very important way that we show others what we believe and one very small way that we can show what God thinks of abortion. I am looking forward to marching and to attending the rally afterwards as well. I pray that you will think about this seriously, because it is a very important issue that we cannot just let sit.

On the Other Side of the World

My guys checking out the historical sights

Charles Schulz Museum- Santa Rosa, Ca

We loved going to this museum last week! Charlie Brown welcomed us! Since Schulz played and enjoyed the game of hockey, it was a big theme here. There is an ice rink next to the museum. It was all decorated for Christmas, complete with a Christmas tree in the center of the ice.
We learned that Schulz loved Beethoven and we were able to listen to many music clips and some history of Beethoven. We learned that Schulz actually wrote parts of Beethoven's music right into his Peanuts comic strips. You see Schroeder playing some above, with Molly listening attentively.
Of course we had to see Snoopy and Woodstock!
The whole gang was there!
It was complete with the Red Baron!
